Wet Rooms - Here To Stay
Wet rooms are becoming increasingly popular as high-end shower solutions in the US and also Europe, partly due to the fact that every home improvement magazine and website is currently informing us that it is massively fashionable, but mainly because they are just extremely practical and can open up a bathroom to make it into a larger, more attractive shower area. Anybody that has travelled in the tropics will be well aware of the popularity of wet rooms in hotels in these regions, and for good reason, they are just so easy to clean at the same time as being spacious and using less materials than a standard shower cubicle set-up. Wet rooms are also extremely flexible in their construction as there are no limitations on size and shape. An additional factor that may influence a decision to install a wet room is the ease of access for people with limited mobility and wheelchair users.
So, what exactly is a wet room? Wet rooms are shower rooms in which the walls and floor are tanked in order to prevent moisture from permeating the outer structure and leading to leaks and damage such as rot. The most popular method of tanking is to use a paint-on rubberized membrane which will totally prevent moisture from leaking out in the event of any damage to tiles or grout. After tanking the walls and floors of wet rooms are usually tiled using either ceramic tiles, or increasingly popular is the use of natural stone tiles such as travertine, marble or limestone. The floor will need to feature a gentle gradient sloping towards the drainage outlet. This slope can be achieved by use of a ready-made floor former which is made to be tiled onto, or by use of a concrete screed or wooden floor. Shower screens for wet rooms will be made from toughened glass and are used t0 define the shower area and to prevent sanitary ware from being splashed with water, however many are left completely open-plan. The floors of disabled wet rooms are often tiled in non-slip tiles when in use by the less-able or elderly, and sometimes the floor can be covered in non-slip vinyl and used in conjunction with grab rails and shower seating as additional comfort and safety features.
Luxury wet rooms may be a trendy answer to shower design, but they are so practical that they are certainly here to stay. Their slick, minimalist lines means that they are perfect for any contemporary design solution, and they provide a spacious and comfortable showering environment.
