Travertine Flooring - Contemporary Style

Classy, cool, contemporary – three words that sum up travertine flooring and go a long way towards explaining travertine’s recent surge in popularity as a flooring material. The appeal of this elegant natural stone lies in the fact that the subtle shades and smooth finish allow it to be used to complement modern kitchen and bathroom designs. Travertine shades tend to vary within each batch and range from ivory, cream and beige to reddish brown, the random effect created by this variation contributes greatly to the contemporary look of travertine flooring.

When thinking about installing travertine flooring it is important to realise that there are different grades of travertine. It is possible to buy commercial grade travertine fairly cheaply although this can be full of holes and is prone to crumbling if the flooring installer fails to ensure that 100% adhesive coverage is achieved. The more expensive first grade travertine has had any holes filled and  honed and is therefore more likely to withstand high traffic volumes as well as being easier to install. Travertine tiles are also available with a polished finish which lends the surface a glossy look.

It is very important to ensure that travertine floor tiles are sealed prior to use, as it is a porous material and any stains can be difficult to remove if not sealed. It is a good idea to seal the tiles before grouting and also after the grout has been applied, as the normal shade of grout in use with travertine flooring is ivory, which is prone to discoloration. This is particularly important when using travertine tiles on a kitchen floor where there is obviously a heightened danger of spillage which could potentially lead to staining. Another important point to be made is that when installing travertine white adhesive should be used rather than the more common grey, as there is a possiblity that this adhesive could show through the tiles.

The use of travertine tiles is not restricted to domestic flooring, and although travertine is an extremely popular material for bathroom, kitchen and conservatory floors in domestic settings, as a material for use on bathroom walls it can look particularly striking. In commercial settings travertine is often used for cladding facades and flooring lobby and reception areas in hotels and office buildings. Travertine stone flooring is also increasingly being used in outdoor projects such as patios and paving garden pathways.
